“Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water." – Zen Proverb
Many disciplines—positive psychology, philosophy, contemplative studies, spiritual and wisdom traditions, education, art, and literature—offer thoughtful insights into living a meaningful life aligned with one’s values. Yet, how do we discern what living well means for us personally? And how do we cultivate a daily practice that motivates and brings us closer to our envisioned life? I believe that any craft or study, when pursued with passion, respect, and reflection, reveals glimpses into the nature of life, humanity, and the essence of a good life.
The concept of the dojo reminds us that, regardless of tradition, certain principles guide us toward mastery: mindful reflection, respectful conduct, consistent practice, connection to a larger purpose, and the support of a practice community. In this dojo, I am not a sensei but an informed practitioner. Whether you seek to reflect, study, play, co-create, or build consistency in your practice, the dojo invites you to walk your path toward a flourishing life. My aim is to create an inclusive space where diverse traditions and perspectives are honored, offering you a safe environment to explore and practice your way in The Good Life Dojo.
